On April 27, 1857 an opera house opened that later became known as the Colon Theatre.
The Colon Thatre that we know today, one of the most celebrated venues in the world of musical art, was established to address the demand for opera, which at the time was considered the ultimate embodiment of musical art.
It opened in 1908 with “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi. Its stage welcomed the most prominent artists of the 20th century. Today the theatre company has dancers, orchestras, workshops, a library and a museum. Its excellent acoustics are world renowned and it can seat 3,542 people.
The plot where the theatre stands is approximately 8,202 square meters and the edifice includes influences from the Italian Renaissance, Greece, German and French, making the Colon Theatre an outstanding example of the eclectic style of architecture that dominated the 19th century. The main hall has seven horse-shoe shaped tiers, three levels of balconies, boxes, galleries, an upper circle, and the gods. The construction of the theatre took 20 years and involved architects Francesco Tamburini, Vittorio Meano and Jules Dormal.
